The Video Game Industry Can't Go On Like This

Yes it can (and probably will). The problem is, for every developer complaining about crunch time and toxic environments, there are a dozen people being overworked in a mine working with actual toxic chemicals. Home health aides, farmers, truck drivers, garbage men, etc. etc. are all overworked, underpaid and unappreciated for far less than game developers make. So yes, while I agree the game industry needs to change, the average person isn't concerned about anyone with "video game" in their job description complaining about work conditions. Sad but true.

These are big, insurmountable-seeming problems, but like all incredibly big projects—like, say, game development—they’re things that can be done, slowly, a little bit at a time. We just have to start.
