Today's Random Thought

So it's 2004. Where are all the killer attack robots? Flying cars? This year sucks already.

Halloween Contest:  -Steve
I have those seven Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9600 128MB cards on the block in my next one a day for a week contest. While these are not ultra high-end Radeon 9800XT cards, they are still very capable and would be a great card for someone that needs DX9 capabilities in their secondary rig, or someone upgrading from last a generation GPU. Get in it to win it.

10.28.03:  -Steve
Mark Reyes, our winner of the RIAA computer sent me along a picture of his brand new computer, and a picture of himself as well.

Why is Mark wearing a tuxedo? Let me explain. The RIAA system was to be shipped to Mark the exact same day as the Killer Gaming Rig #9 was shipped to the other winner...somehow, I had mislabeled the boxes and the two computers were mixed up. I didn't realize this until too late, and FedEx had to catch the two packages somewhere in Colorado and return them to me. I contacted both winners, told them there would be a four day delay or so, and Mark, the winner of our RIAA rig let me know that he wouldn't be there personally to get his computer...because he was getting MARRIED!!!!! Holy Cow!!! Talk about a double whammy!!! Congrats to mark on his win, and his wife!! Woo Hoo!!! And NO...I am not posting pictures of his lovely bride...so don't askl!

Weekend Stuff:  -Steve
I have all the notifications out to the Halo PC winners, check your e-mail! Our next contest will be seven Sapphire Radeon 9600 video cards up for grabs in my next giveaway. I'll probably fire up the next contest early next week ( shooting for Tuesday ).

Max Payne 2:  -Steve
I have a job where I can actually buy games like Halo and Max Payne 2 because, in all seriousness, we use these games in our benchmarking process of everything from video cards to mainboards. So buying games in my house is pretty easy...when I put a game in the shopping cart, my wife gives me that look and then I say "What?!?!?! It's for work dammit!" (
well, without the dammit part ). Anyway, I buy Max Payne 2 because I really liked the original plus everyone is screaming about how great the game is...blah, blah blah.

I install the game at 5pm, figured I'd check it out before I finish a couple articles I am working on. At 10:17pm the game is over. Yes, the graphics look good, and Max looks less constipated this time around. Max has a love story this time...no one cares. Running back and forth through the same levels bites ass in a game that is 5 hours long. I will get many hours of benchmarking bliss out of MP2, so I guess the $50 was worth it...for everyone else, wait until the game hits $29.99 or less...REALLY.

I have some really cool stuff coming up for our next few contests. I have 7 Sapphire Radeon 9600s for an upcoming giveaway. I also have a bunch of $100 gift certificates ( including a $500 one ) for a big giveaway as well. So things ought to be fun around here for a while!

10.16.03:  -Steve
O.K. guys, here's the deal. I have had over 400 people contact me about
1up.com  using our Killer Gaming Rig contest name. First of all, Falcon Northwest simply provided the system for this giveaway. The guys at Falcon Northwest are a great bunch of guys and have nothing to do with the naming of this contest. I shot a polite e-mail over to Ziff-Davis and politely asked them to change the name to Killer Falcon Northwest Gaming Rig.

Google, Ask Jeeves, Yahoo all recognize Hypothermia as the number one search return for "Killer Gaming Rig" over the last four years and it is more than a little confusing to you guys when you see our contest being used by another website. Hypothermia is in no way affiliated with 1up.com or Ziff Davis, and the KGR is here to stay at Hypothermia...have no fear.

*UPDATE 10.17.03* Sam Kennedy contacted my and let me know that they will be changing the name to the suggested Killer Falcon Northwest Gaming Rig to avoid confusion.

We have opened the Autographed Halo PC contest.  In case you missed the post below, our buddy Asia Carrera helped me win a bet with our friend from Microsoft which snagged us 10 copies of Halo for the PC. Gearbox is pitching in by autographing a few of the copies so that we can have one copy of Halo PC to give away every day for a week, and then a couple grand prize AUTOGRAPHED copies!!! Check out the pictures of Asia below...great stuff!!

ENTER HERE!!!

Halo Has Arrived  -Steve
Our copies of Halo arrived via FedEx..."Saturday Delivery" no less...nice. At least our friend at MS is a gracious loser and came through on his word. I have the copies ready to be shipped to Gearbox tomorrow, so I'll probably open the Halo contest over the next few days and run it for a week. Sound cool?

In Your Face!!  -Steve
Due to the huge amount of e-mail I have gotten asking me to explain this whole deal of Asia helping me win a bet....here is the deal, with pictures. I have an acquaintance at Microsoft (
who shall remain unnamed) who "doubted" my friendship with Asia. I know all of you who have been around for the last 3 - 4 years laugh at this, but there are still a few conspiracy theorist out there, our friend at MS is one of them. Any how, the deal was this...10 copies of Halo for the PC if Asia would provide proof that her and I are friends. Easy money baby...easy money!

The pictures are in sequence, the last one has been edited a little for our PG-13 audience though. And there you have it, slam dunk baby, we got 10 copies of Halo on the way for you guys, and Randy Pitchford at Gearbox will have a few autographed up for you guys to sweeten the pot. Unfortunately, I don't know Randy well enough to get a topless picture of him, so you are out of luck there.

Autographed Halo  -Steve
Just a reminder...our buddy, Randy Pitchford, from Gearbox Software has offered to have the team at Gearbox autograph a few copies of Halo PC for you guys. I will have those shipped out ASAP to get them signed. If you haven't played Halo for the PC, you really need to check it out.

10.09.03:  -Steve
We have a bunch of very cool stuff coming up for our next few giveaways. Thanks to Asia Carrera being the coolest person on the planet, she scored you guys 10 copies of the PC version of Halo! How sweet is that? We had a bet with someone (who will go unnamed) who just could NOT grasp the concept that Asia and I really friends...someone LOST the bet, and now we have 10 copies of Halo PC for our next giveaway.

All the winning notices for the winners in the TDK DVD Burner contest were shipped out this weekend, almost everyone has responded, so check your mailboxes. I want to clear this contest up before I move on to our next project. By the way, go see School of Rock or The Rundown, they both kick ass or grab the new Evanescence CD, it is really...really good and it is cheap too.

Goddess of Geek:  -Steve
What are friends for? Asia Carrera, AKA the Goddess of Geek, does a lot of stuff around here to help boost my "cool factor" and make me seem way cooler than I actually am. After all, it isn't every day that you can brag about having someone as awesome as Asia wearing your clothes.

One A Day Giveaway:  -Steve
How about a handful of TDK 4X DVD+R /+RW CD-R/-RW drives for our next One a Day for a Week Giveaway? Well that is just what we have for you today in our latest giveaway. These are fantastic for data back up and the best way to back up your important movies and DVDs for home use. As always, it is as simple as dropping your name in the hat to get one of these awesome DVD burners. Get in it to win it and Good Luck!
