Today's Random Thought

When you go in for a job interview, I think a good thing to ask is if they ever press charges.

The Killer Gaming Rig #12 is going to kick off on Friday, I will have some preliminary specs to post by then to whet your appetite. I promise this will be the biggest & baddest of them all...I guarantee it! Be ready!

Since my situation (
being stuck on dial-up until Monday) prevents me from responding to all 412 of you from the Umatilla / Hermiston Oregon area, I'll just post here what I was looking for and maybe someone will be able to help or know someone that could.  I am trying to locate yearbooks from 1980 - 1986 from Umatilla High School and a yearbook from 1986 - 1987 from Pendleton High School. Also, anyone that knows an Arleta Hawkins from Pendleton around that same time shoot me a line as well.

Dial-Up HELL  -Steve
I have been spoiled for years now by broadband. I haven't had a modem installed in any computer I have owned for 2½ - 3 years. That is until this week. Apparently the COM21 cable modems are susceptible to broadcasting , that means when someone is running a game server over their cable modem or they have an infected computer that spits out spam all day, it impacts COM21 users. So, my ISP is swapping out my COM21 for an RCA digital cable modem....but they haven't brought it back!!!! ACK!!

The moral of the story is this, downloading 100's of e-mail, trying to update the website and work while on dial-up sucks big time. If you sent me an e-mail, I will get back to you...I swear. I just need to get back on broadband first!!

For those of you interested, we had the chance to sit down with id Software, NVIDIA, ATi and DOOM 3 and get the first set of official DOOM 3 benchmarks.  Very, very good information for those of you wondering what it is going to take to get DOOM 3 running on your box.

Mod Project  -Steve
I have an upcoming article that features a cool little R/C truck PC mod that I am doing at [H]ardOCP that some of you guys will really get off on.  Here are a few sneak peek pictures to pique your curiosity:

All of the winners of the ATi All-In-Wonder 9800Pro giveaway have responded and the cards will be shipped out in the morning via our friends at FedEx. We have another great giveaway coming up very soon and we will be opening the Killer Gaming Rig #12 soon as well...so keep checking back for that as well. I have updated the REVIEWS section of Hypothermia with links to my latest reviews as well. Feel free to check them out if you haven't already!

We have sent out winning notifications to all the ATi All-In-Wonder winners, check your mailbox to see if you have won. As always, look for an e-mail from steve@hypothermia.us or steve@hardocp.com. I have a bunch of really, really god stuff coming up for you guys, and the Killer Gaming Rig #12 is coming up soon too.

Been super busy lately...must be that time of year again. I will be drawing the four winners of the ATi All-In-Wonder 9800Pro video cards on Friday night so get your entries in. I also asked about people from Umatilla or Pendleton, Oregon and ended up getting flooded with mail (
who knew it was so popular there) so I am still trying to answer all that mail...if you wrote to me, I'm still working on responding to everyone.

Comic Stuff  -Steve
Since I brought up my hobby of collecting comic books, I get a lot of questions about comic grading, and CGC Comics in particular. First of all, CGC is the only real grading service on the planet. If you have a nice comic or comic collection, they are the people to go to. I am currently boxing up my X-Men #1 thru #69 to be graded and I am equally excited / nervous (
they already have 70 of my collection now).

Having said that, CGC currently has turn around time issues but they are doing their best to keep up with the high demand for their services. As long as you you are prepared for longer than normal return times you are fine. The only problem I have is the CGC forums, not the company. If you visit the forums, just remember that the forums at CGC do not represent the company.

Any of you guys from, or know someone from, Umatilla or Pendleton, Oregon? Out of the thousands of people that stop by here every day, I figure one of you guys has to either be from there or know someone who lives there. I need some info...shoot me a line if you can help.

Mensa Bulletin  -Steve
Many of you hardcore Asia fans know that our very own Goddess of Geek is a member of Mensa, something that many of her critics disputed. I have a magazine for all Asia fans and critics alike to read Mensa Bulletin magazine. The edition features famous Mensa members. I am trying to get information for you guys now so you can order a copy for yourself.

I am not sure what prompted this but I have received a TON of e-mail about why I do not have a "donations" button on my site. First of all, I do this stuff for you guys not for profit, I always have...always will. There have been times in the past where people have PayPal'd Steve A Beer and so on, but I do not want to have a regular donation button on my site like other websites, that is just not what Hypothermia is about. Hypothermia is about YOU.

There is no doubt that I have sacrificed a lot over the last five years to do the things I do here. Almost every single system you see given away here was paid for in part (or completely) by me, parts supplied by me, rounded up by me and all were assembled by me. I have paid for shipping on 75% of all the systems shipped to winners. Yes we get parts donations from vendors or I trade advertising for part donations...but pounding the streets looking for hardware sponsors is a full time job as well.

Simply put, I do this because I can. I figure that if any of you were in the position I was in, you would do the same. I don't mind the "have a beer on me" things you guys do, but there will never be a regular "donation" button on Hypothermia.

*sigh*...My dream car. Eventually I plan to sell off the cars I have and get myself a nice 1963 - 1967 Corvette coupe, but for now I will have to be content with what I have. I have had the money to do it a few times but I keep putting it off or spending it on stuff for Hypothermia. Eventually I will just put everything on hold and buy myself one, but I keep finding other things that need my attention first. Damn, my birthday is August 15th too, I hate priorities!!!

Happy Fourth of July!!!

07.01.04  -Steve
The Sony Car Audio system went out to the winner yesterday courtesy of our friends at FedEx. We have a bunch of really good stuff coming up for you guys reall soon so check back often. Everyone have a safe upcoming 4th of July weekend too. Be careful with them fireworks, I want everyone to come back after the weekend with ten fingers and toes...well, if you started out with that many that is!
